Shark Incidents by Decade
Explore broader historical periods while keeping the limitations of older source material visible.
A decade view can reveal how the available record changes over time, but it should not be described as a direct trend in shark behavior. Human population, beach use, water sports, rescue systems, news coverage and database practices all changed dramatically across the historical record.
Every decade chart must disclose the date through which the dataset was reviewed and should keep unknown classifications and species visible rather than dropping inconvenient missing data.
