Blacktip shark

Slug: `/species/blacktip-shark/` Scientific name: Carcharhinus limbatus

The blacktip shark is a common coastal requiem shark in warm waters. It has a streamlined form and dark markings on several fins, although visual identification can be confused with similar species.

Blacktip sharks occur in shallow coastal environments that are also heavily used by people. That overlap can place the species in incident reports, particularly in areas with warm nearshore water.

The website must distinguish the blacktip shark from the blacktip reef shark; they are different species. Never use a blacktip reef shark image on this page.
